Diaries are precious, especially if their creator is someone we know and appreciate.

I love Mildred's shoes!

I like the way you take us through her life but in so doing reveal your own. This is a lovely mechanism to arrange the story around. I am wrestling with how to write about the large number of family letters from the WWII war years. This is an inspiration.

David, Thank you. It took me a long time to get my head around how I wanted to do this. This seemed to be how I wanted to tell it. I encourage you to try it and see how it feels.

How fortunate you are to have your mother's diary and how brilliant of her to keep one. Perhaps it is a gentle reminder that it is something we all should be doing ... If not for ourselves, for future generations! I love that you can see yourself in her!

Jane, Thanks! Yes, I am so lucky. Yes, I can see myself in her in more than one way!! I always thought I was more my father, but after reading her diary I doubt that.

I have my mother's diaries and I've kept my own since the 1960s. It does create a bond, that desire to record one's life.

Virginia, So glad you have your mom’s and glad you’ve kept your own. I wish I had all the letters Mom wrote to her friend Ginny. I wish I would have asked Ginny if she had them and if she’d let me have them before she died. But I didn’t even though I thought about it! That would have given me a much bigger window on her life as my mother, although Ginny did tell me things about her I didn’t know. Thanks for stopping by to read and comment. I appreciate it.

If my mother ever wrote a diary so never mentioned it. Her home situation was not ideal so maybe she never wanted to record anything. It was a different story for me. I’ve written in one off and on since 4th grade. I love rereading it, especially all my teenage dating drama and dates with my now husband.

Lesley, I can understand that, but also not all teenage girls wrote in diaries. I thought because I had one, that others did too, but I don't remember ever hearing any of my friends writing in diaries back when we were teens. I used to teach journal writing and I'd show the class my diary from the 60s. I'd read a couple entries to get the group laughing! And for me, too, it's nice looking back and reading what happened back then, then through high school, college and a couple divorces and deaths.

How lucky you are to have this diary. I was gutted when I cleaned out my departed mother's house and discovered she'd destroyed all the letters she and my dad had written each other before they were married.

Oh Lisa, That is so sad. I put liked but wanted to put a sad face. I'm sorry.

Isn’t that amazing. Our parents didn’t want us, their adult children to perceive them as vulnerable. Sigh. Will we do the same with our children? I don’t know.
