Can completely echo the use of a second monitor, I've found it to be essential! I, like you, had used one screen for ages and didn't think I needed a second one. I always ask myself how I managed to do things with only one screen. It's revolutionary.
I also use two screens on my PC. I just got a second screen for my laptop so I can do my genealogy research when I need to sit with my legs elevated. My son has six screens, all wall mounted, but he's a programmer so I guess it makes sense. I wish I had room for a third.
A scanner also comes in handy so photographs and paper documents can be digitalized.
I also found that one of those smart reusable notebooks, like a Rocketbook, are great for research away from home. You snap a picture of your notes in the app and it converts them to text. Sure beats typing them when you get home.
Mira, Six screens - Yikes!! I do have a scanner but have started using my phone recently. I'll check out that Rocketbook. I don't know anything about them. Sounds like a great gadget. Thanks for feeding my addiction!! And thanks for stopping by and commenting!!
I'm all in on the second screen. I had two screens before recently switching from a PC to MAC and I *must* have a second screen again. You are so right...it saves oodles of time when working on family trees. When I'm writing, I keep my research notes and information up on the second screen so I can easily refer to it. I'm glad you posted the info about connecting with an adaptor because I still have one of the screens from my previous system. I know what my project for this weekend will be!
I have a MacBook Pro which has a pretty large monitor (which is why I got it) but then this last October I thought I would see what a second monitor could do for my genealogy efforts. IT IS AMAZING. And, like you said, the cost was minimal. I highly recommend!
Kirsi, Yes, it makes so much difference for genealogy and other things. For the last couple days I've been helping a friend with the final formatting of her first book and I was able to look at the Pdf I sent her in one monitor with the Word doc in the main one where I made changes as we talked over the phone. So much easier than one screen going back and forth.
Gadget Girl here! I got it from my Dad. I have been seriously considering getting one of those huge gaming screens for my genealogy! I have been using dual monitors for a while now and I love it! I actually went to an iPhone just so I could have some of the genealogy apps available!
Barbara, Love it!! I don't use my Iphone much for genealogy. I do have Ancestry on it which is good when I'm at the library but otherwise I've not had much luck. Tried the google translation with it and didn't help much. Would love to know what apps you use on the Iphone.
I love gadets too Linda. I remember when the Blackberry came out. I really didn't need it at the time, or so I thought, and went ahead and bought one. Of course, I found I did need it. I've had two monitors for about four years, and really don't know how I managed with only one.
Jennifer, Glad to meet a fellow gadget lover. I never got a blackberry but had a pager when I had my own business. Sounds like I’m late to the second monitor party! Everyday I’m on my computer I see how helpful it is. Thanks for reading and stopping to comment.
Game changer, indeed, @Lynda Heines! I currently only have one monitor on my MacMini but I cheat with a not too old iPad configured for "Screen Mirroring" it lets me turn the iPad into a mini monitor which is incredibly useful for Zoom-based presentations where I can push the Zoom controller onto the other screen and present fullscreen.
Second monitors like all tools... they're right up there with opposable thumbs. VERY useful. 😉

Daniel, Thanks for chiming in. For the expense, it's so worth it. Thanks for stopping by.

Cynthia, Glad my post helped. I've only had it a week and I can't believe what all I can do with it.

I have two apps on there that I believe only run on iOS: Remento and Biograph.

I never thought about it but my husband uses 4!
OMG! Four!!! That would be way too confusing!!

Barbara, That works! Great idea to use your Ipad for Zoom.
